Hi all, Did you know that July is Fibroid awareness month? Fibroids are really common and around 2 in 3 women will develop a fibroid in their life between the ages of 30 and 50. But what are fibroids and what causes them?Unfortunately – there is no known cause of fibroids but research suggest that the hormone oestrogen is a factor in the development and growth of a fibroid. Which is why once we hit menopause, they often shrink and go away on their own. Fibroids are growths in the womb that are made up of muscle and other tissues and are non cancerous. Usually if they are small then they don’t cause a problem and you may not even know that they are there. If they grow then they can sometimes impact the lining of the womb which can cause problems when trying to conceive as an embryo needs to implant in the womb lining. Fibroids can be easily managed with medication or surgery usually but its important to get checked out if you suspect you may have a fibroid. Some of the common symptoms are below:Heavy and painful periodsTummy painLower back pain Pain when having sexYou can find further information and support at http://www.britishfibroidtrust.org.uk but also see your Doctor.Take care,Fran x
